FAMILY POVERTY

In 1856 the economic situation of the Soubirous family was worse than ever. They had to leave the mill of Arcizac, and were employed in Lourdes as simple day laborers. They rented a small room in the street of Bourg, but in November they had to leave it and go to live in the house of a second cousin of Louise, Andrés Sajoux, who lived in the old prison of the city, which had been moved 30 years ago because it was very unhealthy

Andrew lived on the first floor and gave the Soubirous the basement, called the jail, a very dark place where the sun never entered. There they moved with the four children they then had. They barely had a trunk, a suitcase, chairs and three beds. There was no room for more, as the room measured four meters by five.
