Jesus speaks to Saint Faustina Kowalska.

– The soul: Lack of health stops me on the road to holiness, I can’t fulfill my obligations, well, I’m a sufferer. I cannot mortify myself or do rigorous fasts as the saints did; (87) Besides, they don’t believe that I’m sick and the physical suffering is added to the moral one and many humiliations arise from it. You see, Jesus, how can one become a saint in such conditions?

Jesus: So, My child, this time you have told Me a lot. I know that it is a great suffering not to be (88) understood and above all by those we love and to whom we show great sincerity, but it is enough for you that I understand you in all your sorrows and your miseries. I like your deep faith that, despite everything, you have in My representatives, but you must know that men cannot fully understand a soul, because that exceeds their possibilities. That is why I Myself have stayed on earth to console your suffering heart and fortify your soul so that you do not stop along the way. You say that great darkness covers your mind, so why don’t you come to Me who am the light in such moments and in a single instant I can instill in your soul so much light and so much understanding of holiness that you will not learn by reading any book? nor is any confessor capable of teaching or enlightening the soul in this way. You must also know that because of this darkness of which you complain, I have first passed through you in the Garden of Olives. My soul was crushed by a mortal sadness and I give you a small part of these sufferings due to My special love for you and the high degree of holiness that I destined for you in heaven. The soul that suffers is the one that is closest to My Heart.

– The soul: Yes, I know everything, (91) but I am assailed by great temptations and various doubts arise in me and besides, everything irritates and discourages me.

– Jesus: My child, you must know that the greatest obstacle to holiness is discouragement and unjustified restlessness that deprive you of the possibility of practicing the virtues. All the temptations together should not for a moment disturb your inner peace and irritability and discouragement are the fruits of your self-esteem. You must not be discouraged but try to make My love reign instead of your own love. Therefore, trust, My child; you should not be discouraged, [but rather] come to Me to ask for forgiveness, because I am always ready to forgive you. Every time you ask Me, you glorify My mercy
