ROME, 29 Aug. 16 / 03:15 pm (ACI).- Mother Teresa talked and had visions of Jesus before founding the Missionaries of Charity, something that was not known until her death, a fact that was also ignored by one of his friends for 30 years, Fr. Sebastian Vazhakala.
In dialogue with ACI Prensa, the missionary priest of charity explained that this information «was a great discovery.»
When in 1997, only two years after her death, the cause of canonization of the nun was opened, various documents were found in which these locutions and visions that Mother Teresa had many years ago were recounted.
The period of this profound experience passed between September 10, 1946 and December 3, 1947, when the Blessed was still with the sisters of Loreto.
Mother Teresa wrote one day that during Communion she heard Jesus say: «I want Indian religious, victims of my love, who are like Martha and Mary, who are so united to me as to radiate my love to souls.»
In these locutions the Lord instructed Mother Teresa to found the Missionaries of Charity. Another of the things that Jesus said to the nun was “Come, be my light”, which is also the title of the book that the postulator for the cause of canonization, Fr. Brian Kolodiejchuk, published with the private letters of the Blessed.
In another of the visions, Jesus Christ told Mother Teresa that in the new congregation there should be “free religious covered with the poverty of the cross. I want obedient sisters covered with the obedience of the cross. I want nuns full of love covered with the charity of the Cross”, explains Fr. Vazhakala.
After this very intense time of visions and locutions of the Lord, in 1949 Mother Teresa began to experience a «terrible darkness and dryness» in her spiritual life, a stage that would last 50 years, almost until the end of her days, a time that in the life of faith can be called the “dark night”.
A few years ago, in an interview granted to a Spanish media outlet, Fr. Brian Kolodiejchuk explained that the so-called «dark night» is a moment «of the spiritual life in which the person is purified before the intimate and transforming union with Christ ”.
“What we understand as dark night was experienced by the Blessed when she was still in Loreto, the religious congregation where she began her dedication to God. The years 1946-1947 were of joyful and sweet intimate union with Jesus. ‘Jesus gave himself to me’, says the Mother in one of her letters. The union of the Mother with Jesus was “violent”, deeply felt and lived. Then, when the work with the poor began and the foundation of the congregation, came that new and prolonged darkness that was no longer preparatory to another spiritual stage. Of this darkness she speaks in letters to her confessors and her spiritual directors”.
“In 1942 the Mother herself made a vow never to deny anything to Jesus. Shortly afterward she was herself when she heard Jesus say to her: ‘Come, be my light.’ In the beginning the Mother brought the ‘light’ to places even of absolute physical darkness: many poor people did not even have windows. She accepted her inner darkness to bring others to light. The Jesuit Neuner (one of her confessors) in 1962 explained to her that that dark night was the ‘spiritual side of her apostolic work’”, explained Fr Kolodiejchuk.
In Fr. Vazhakala’s recent dialogue with ACI Prensa, the priest recalls that Mother Teresa said that “if my darkness and dryness can be a light for some souls, let me be the first to do that. If my life, my suffering, is going to help save souls, then I prefer to suffer and die from the creation of the world until the end of time
The priest recalls that the nun also said that «when I die and go home with God, I will be able to bring more souls to Him.»
«I’m not going to sleep in heaven, I’m going to work harder in another way,» she said.
