China firmó un proyecto de 3,8 billones de dólares para construir una línea de ferrocarril que unirá el puerto de Mombasa (Kenia) con Uganda, Ruanda, Burundi y Sudán del Sur.

El acuerdo fue firmado en Nairobi el domingo por el primer ministro chino, Li Keqiang, y los presidentes de Kenia, Uganda, Ruanda y Sudán del Sur. La primera etapa del proyecto supondrá la construcción de la línea ferroviaria entre el puerto de Mombasa y Nairobi para seguir después a los países vecinos (Uganda, Burundi, Ruanda y Sudán del Sur), informa la página web de la cadena Al Jazeera.

En el marco del proyecto Eximbank China va a invertir el 90% del coste para reemplazar la vía estrecha de 609 km construida en el período colonial británico. El resto del coste lo asumirá Kenia.

La empresa China Communication Construction será el suministrador principal de la construcción, que empezará en octubre y durará tres años y medio. En cuanto esté finalizada la línea entre Nairobi y Mombasa se llevará a cabo la unión de las capitales de África Oriental: Kampala, Kigali, Buyumbura y Juba.
