El Cóndor es un animal exclusivamente carroñero, esto quiere decir que no mata ni caza para comer, sino que se alimenta de cadáveres de animales o carroña.

El Cóndor es un carroñero por excelencia, posee una cabeza y cuello desprovisto de plumas, lo que facilita la limpieza luego de comer, refregándose contra el suelo o las rocas puede despojarse de los restos de sangre o carroña que se le adhieren al meter su largo cuello dentro de los cadáveres.

El cóndor no es depredador feroz ni agresivo y tiene una asombrosa capacidad para resistir el hambre y la sed, puede pasarse hasta un mes y medio sin comer al tiempo que conserva su vigor

Cuando un Cóndor localiza un cadáver comienza a volar en círculos, en poco tiempo se podrá ver como los demás Cóndores comienzan a acercarse. Son muy desconfiados para bajar a comer, pudiendo pasar algunos días hasta que se deciden a posarse cerca del alimento.

Existe una marcada jerarquía a la hora de comer, primero lo harán los machos adultos, luego las hembras adultas y más tarde los sub adultos y juveniles
