Hundreds remember Cardinal Van Thuân, imprisoned for 13 years by communism in Vietnam

ROME, 15 Sep. 17 / 08:25 am (ACI).- Emotional Mass of thanksgiving in Rome on the occasion of the promulgation of the decree, last May, that recognizes the heroic virtues of Cardinal François-Xavier Van Thuân , who spent 13 years locked up in prison in Vietnam solely for being Catholic.

The Cardinal was also remembered on September 16, 15 years since his death. For eight years he was bishop of the Vietnamese diocese of Nhatrang (between 1967 and 1975) and in 1975 Paul VI appointed him coadjutor archbishop of Saigon. However, a few months later, with the arrival of the communist regime to the government, he was arrested.

The celebration took place in the church of Santa María della Scala and was presided over by Cardinal Peter Turkson, Prefect of the dicastery for the Promotion of Integral Human Development, in the Vatican.

The Cardinal spent 13 years in prison, 9 of them in solitary confinement. In 1988 he was released and placed under house arrest in Hanoi, but was not allowed to return to the diocese. Finally, in 1991 he was authorized to go to Rome but he was not allowed to return and he had to live in exile in this city until 2002, when he died of cancer.
