Father Kolbe is on the black list of the Secret Police. Why? Father Kolbe is the superior of Niepokalanow, whose Marian activities are so influential throughout Poland. The Nazis want to destroy that influence and at the same time they want revenge for the fact that «El Pequeño Diario» came out of those workshops, whose patriotic and Catholic preaching had infuriated them so much. Worse still, Father Kolbe, due to his priesthood, culture and position, was a remarkable leader. The occupation program included the extermination of the intellectuals and leaders. In addition, in Niepokalanow asylum was provided to Jews. In the anti-Semitic eyes of the Nazis, this was a crime that deserved the punishment of concentration camps.

For two weeks something changed in Auschwitz: for the first time there were no cries of despair, no profanity or threats in the cellars of the starvation bunker. What happened there we know from an exceptional witness, a Pole who served as an interpreter between the condemned and the German guards. Here is part of his story:
