In the letters of Saint Faustina

From the charism of Saint Sister Faustina not only a new school of spirituality emerged, but also the Apostolic Movement of Divine Mercy, which tries to carry out, in various ways, the mission of proclaiming God’s mercy to the world through witness of life, by deeds, by word and by prayer.

The idea of this movement was revealed to Saint Faustina in Vilna, in 1935, when Jesus conveyed to her his desire that a new congregation be founded, that would proclaim Divine Mercy and implore it for the world (Diary 436). At first, she thought that she had to leave her Congregation and found a new contemplative religious order, for which she wrote a summary of the religious rule. However, little by little, she realized that the idea that the Lord had transmitted to her was not only to create a convent or a congregation.

In a letter to her spiritual director, Father Miguel Sopoćko, in early 1936, she wrote: I can clearly see that it will not only be a female and a male congregation, but I also see that it will be a large association of lay people, to the which anyone will be able to belong and through the works they will be able to remind each other of the Mercy of God. Don’t let these words seem crazy to you, Father, because they are an authentic truth that will soon be put into practice and even though I don’t have anyone in favor of this work, nothing discourages me, because it is enough for me to know that it is God’s will. However, she still believed that her role in this work would be to found a contemplative religious order. The desire to fulfill this task constituted the framework in which the passive purification of the spirit (reason and will) would take place in his life, a period after which he reached the highest peaks of union with God: the mystical betrothal.

Finally, in that mystical experience she knew clearly that, although it was a single work, it would have three nuances or aspects. The first is made up of the contemplative orders, that is, souls separated from the world who will burn as victims before the throne of God and will ask for mercy for the whole world… they will implore blessings for the priests and, through prayer, they will prepare the world for the final coming of Jesus (Diary 1155). The second group will be made up of religious congregations that will join her prayers, works of mercy, and through prayer will strive to awaken the love and mercy of Jesus in this world full of selfishness (Diary 1156). All the people who live in the world may belong to the third group (Diary 1157), without being bound by any type of vow, but who through prayer and acts of mercy will participate in all the merits and privileges of the Community (Diary 1157 ). Each member of this group, during the day, should do at least one act of mercy, although it can be more, because each one can easily do it, even the poorest (Diary 1158
