Durante la actual ofensiva, los militantes del Estado Islámico de Irak y el Levante han capturado la segunda mayor ciudad iraquí, Mosul, así como la ciudad de Tikrit, la capital de la provincia de Salahuddin. El grupo afirma haber matado a 1.700 soldados iraquíes. El objetivo de los insurgentes es capturar la capital, Bagdad, aunque las fuerzas del Gobierno fueron capaces de detener la insurgencia durante el fin de semana.

Sin embargo, algunos políticos estadounidenses creen que el EIIL puede afectar la seguridad en todo el mundo, una vez se consolide en Irak.

Mike Rogers, presidente del Comité de Inteligencia, dijo a Fox News que hay «miles» de voluntarios y mercenarios estadounidenses y europeos que luchan por el EIIL, que «tiene la capacidad de aprovechar a las personas con pasaportes occidentales para enviarlos de regreso a Europa y Estados Unidos para actividades terroristas».

El pasado viernes el presidente estadounidense Barack Obama dijo que examina todas las opciones, hasta el envío de tropas, para detener el rápido avance del EIIL en Irak. Después Obama anunció que el país norteamericano no va a enviar sus tropas para combatir en Irak, pero aseguró estar revisando otra serie de opciones para apoyar al Gobierno iraquí en su lucha contra los insurgentes del EIIL.
