Un estudio de los bosques de la Patagonia argentina y chilena mostró que en las últimas tres décadas los árboles sufrieron un retroceso sustantivo en su crecimiento.

Desde que se detectó el agujero de ozono hace 30 años, la tasa de crecimiento ha sido la más baja de los últimos 600 años, según la investigación publicada en la revista ‘Nature Geoscience’.

Ante estos resultados, los científicos decidieron investigar los anillos de los árboles en otra parte del mundo -Australia y Nueva Zelandia– para averiguar si se registra un patrón similar.

Con gran asombro hallaron lo contrario: los árboles de las zonas extremas del sur han crecido a niveles más altos en las últimas tres décadas, desde aproximadamente el año 1700.

Según el investigador principal Ricardo Villalba, del Instituto Argentino de Nivología, Glaciología y Ciencias Ambientales (IANIGLA), el fenómeno se relaciona con la variación en el movimiento de vientos y, consecuentemente, precipitaciones y temperaturas, la llamada oscilación antártica.

Los investigadores creen que la depleción de ozono impactó los ciclos de la oscilación, prolongando la sequía en una región y lluvias en la otra.
