Parable of the Prodigal Son
11 He said, “A man had two sons. 12 The younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the portion of his property that falls to me. ’ And he divided his property between them. 13 Not many days later, the younger son gathered everything together and went into a far country, where he wasted his property in riotous living. 14 When he had spent everything, a severe famine arose in that country, and he began to be in need. 15 So he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country. He sent him to his fields to feed swine. 16 He longed to fill his belly with the husks that the swine were eating, but no one gave him anything. 17 When he came to himself, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have bread enough and to spare, and here I am dying of hunger! ’ 18 I will arise and go to my father, and will say to him, Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you, 19 I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me as one of your hired servants. 20 Then he arose and came to his father. And while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was moved with compassion, and ran and fell on his neck and kissed him. 21 And the son said to him, Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you, and am no longer worthy to be called your son. 22 But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet. 23 And bring the fatted calf and kill it, and let us eat and celebrate; 24 for this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to rejoice. 25 Now his eldest son was in the field; and when he came and drew near the house, he heard music and dancing. 26 And he called one of the servants and asked him what this meant. 27 And he said to him, Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fatted calf, because he has received him back safe and sound. 28 Then he was angry and would not go in. So his father went out and begged him to come in. 29 But he answered and said to his father, Behold, these many years I have served you, and I have never disobeyed you, and yet you have never given me even a young goat, that I might make merry with my friends. 30 But when this son of yours came, who has devoured your property with harlots, you killed the fatted calf for him. 31 Then he said to him, Son, you are always with me, and all that I have is yours. 32 But we had to celebrate and rejoice, for this brother of yours was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found.
