1 It seemed good to Darius to appoint one hundred and twenty satraps over the kingdom, to rule throughout the kingdom. 2 And over them three governors, of whom Daniel was one, to whom these satraps gave account, so that the king would not be harmed. 3 But Daniel himself was superior to these satraps and governors, because there was a superior spirit in him; and the king thought to put him over the whole kingdom. 4 Then the governors and satraps were looking for an opportunity to accuse Daniel regarding the kingdom; but they could find no occasion or fault, because he was faithful, and no vice or fault was found in him. 5 Then those men said, We will not find any occasion against this Daniel to accuse him, unless we find it against him in relation to the law of his God.

6 Then these governors and satraps gathered together before the king, and said to him thus: King Darius, live forever! 7 All the governors of the kingdom, magistrates, satraps, princes and captains have agreed by council that you issue a royal edict and confirm it, that whoever in the space of thirty days requests petition from any god or man except you, O king, be thrown into the lions’ den. 8 Now, O king, confirm the edict and sign it, so that it cannot be revoked, according to the law of Media and Persia, which cannot be repealed. 9 So King Darius signed the edict and the prohibition.

10 When Daniel knew that the edict had been signed, he entered his house, and with the windows of his chamber open toward Jerusalem, he knelt down three times a day and prayed and gave thanks before his God, as he used to do before. . 11 Then those men gathered together, and found Daniel praying and supplicating in the presence of his God. 12 Then they went to the king and told him about the royal edict: Have you not confirmed an edict that whoever within thirty days asks any god or man besides you, O king, should be thrown into the lions’ den? The king answered and said: It is true, according to the law of Media and Persia, which cannot be abrogated. 13 Then they answered and said before the king: Daniel, who is one of the sons of the captives of Judah, does not respect you, O king, nor obey the edict that you confirmed, but three times a day he makes his request.

14 When the king heard the matter, he was very sorry, and he resolved to release Daniel; and until the setting of the sun he worked to deliver him. 15 But those men surrounded the king and said to him: Know, O king, that it is the law of Media and Persia that no edict or ordinance that the king confirms can be abrogated.

16 Then the king commanded, and they brought Daniel, and cast him into the lions’ den. And the king said to Daniel, May your God, whom you continually serve, deliver you. 17 And a stone was brought and placed on the door of the den, which the king sealed with his ring and with the ring of his princes, so that the agreement regarding Daniel would not be disturbed. 18 Then the king went to his palace, and went to bed fasting; nor musical instruments were brought before him, and sleep left him.

n the morning and hurried to the lions’ den. 20 And coming to the den he called out to Daniel with a sad voice, and said to him, Daniel, servant of the living God, has your God, whom you continually serve, been able to deliver you from the lions? 21 Then Daniel said to the king, “O king, he lives forever.” 22 My God sent his angel, who closed the mouth of the lions, so that they would not harm me, because before him I was found innocent; and even before you, O king, I have done nothing wrong. 23 Then the king was very glad because of him, and he ordered Daniel to be brought out of the den; And Daniel was taken out of the den, and no injury was found on him, because he had trusted in his God. 24 And the king gave the order, and those men who had accused Daniel were brought, and they, their children, and their wives were thrown into the lions’ den; and they had not yet reached the bottom of the den, when the lions seized them and broke all their bones.

25 Then King Darius wrote to all the peoples, nations, and languages ​​that inhabit the whole earth: Peace be multiplied to you. 26 This ordinance is placed on my behalf: That in all the dominion of my kingdom everyone should fear and tremble at the presence of the God of Daniel; for he is the living God and endures forever, and his kingdom will never be destroyed, and his dominion will endure to the end. 27 He saves and delivers, and he works signs and wonders in heaven and on earth; He has delivered Daniel from the power of the lions.
