Keys to understanding the dark night that Mother Teresa of Calcutta went through

When her personal papers were published, it was learned that for 50 years Mother Teresa of Calcutta experienced what mystics call «the dark night of the soul.»

It was known because shortly after her death, some Jesuit priests guarded some of the saint’s private writings.

«Years after her death, when we began the beatification process, they gave us these documents that the Jesuits had guarded. Then we discovered things that we did not know about her. Nobody in the congregation knew that for 50 years experienced that darkness.»

Mother Teresa was a very reserved person, who wanted her prayer life to remain between her and Jesus. She experienced the most difficult test, feeling rejected by the Lord, the One to whom she had dedicated her life.

«When she prayed she felt empty and that hurt her a lot. It took her a long time to understand what God wanted with that trial. This darkness sometimes occurs in the spiritual life; it purifies and helps one love God for oneself. , and not for what it gives usâ?.
